Sedgwick County firefighters forced out last night after a grass fire consumed more than 20 acres of land.
The fire started at about 9 p.m. at 263rd St. W. and 79st St. S.
Terry Mauldin, Sedgwick County Fire division chief, said a man was starting a brush fire, when it apparently got out of control. The man failed to contact authorities, forcing fire crews to take down the blaze.
Mauldin said fire crews were able to get a good grip on the fire, but faced some difficulties in the sandy terrain. One fire truck remains stuck in the area.
The man who started the brush fire does have a burn permit, but Mauldin said he will not face any charges.
Instead, he must remain outside until the fire is extinguished. This incident could affect his ability to obtain future permits, Mauldin said.
No homes were in danger from the fire.
