Downtown Mulvane was filled with casino well wishers along with a few casino nay-sayers Saturday as the Harrah's Casino offices celebrated their grand opening.
The office will serve as a casino information center. Anyone who has a question or needs some information can drop in and someone will be there to help out.
Saturday, the office was filled with music, food, and fun inside. But outside, protesters lined the streets. That's evidence that the hot button casino issue continues to divide the once united small town.
Protesters readily admit they do not want the casino in their town, but they say that's not the issue of the day. They're frustrated and angry because they say the Mulvane City Council is violating their rights as citizens and prohibiting them from voicing their opinions.
"There's a majorly corrupt city council in Mulvane," says Emily Davis. "They don't want any dissent. They don't want to have to deal with us. We're just a nuisance to them and when we do try, they silence us. I don't know what's happened to the first amendment."
City Attorney J-T Klaus argues otherwise, saying, "Those allegations, although sprinkled with a few facts, are as untruthful as they are inflammatory. The anti-casino point of view has been heard and represented at all public hearings held by the city."
Klaus says it's impossible to please everyone in this emotional issue, but he hopes this clears up the rumors and misconceptions circulating through the community. Klaus also says that everyone is welcome to attend the city council meetings, which he says are not secretive.
If anyone has any questions or concerns about the casino they can visit Harrah's new offices in downtown Mulvane, visit City Hall, or call 316-777-1143.
