A financially troubled local attraction is getting ready to make a big comeback. Scenes from the Old West will soon be on display once again at Wichita's Cowtown museum and the city wants to make sure everyone knows it.
"We're doing some guerrilla tactics to make sure we get the word out that Cowtown is open and operating," says City Arts Director John D'Angelo. To get the word out, the city is looking to spend up to $54,000 over the next year to hire a marketing firm.
The firm will update old information plus make new brochures for visitor centers, create a new e-mail campaign, come up with new admission packages and plan a big to-do for the grand re-opening in two months.
"It's become a city entity so we need to mark it and brand that message," says D'Angelo.
Wichita officials took control of the financially failing Cowtown Museum last year. The living history attraction had been steadily losing money, partly due to a lack of attendance.
The city also had to spend big bucks to fix up several buildings that weren't up to code. Now the city hopes new events, including the Diamond "W" Wranglers, will turn this latest chapter in the museums' history into a successful one.
The city council is set to vote to hire the new marketing firm on Tuesday.
