Wichita Police are trying to re-establish contact with an anonymous tipster who called regarding Tuesday's officer-involved shooting downtown. They say the information this person has could crack the case.
Amazingly, the officer was uninjured when a bullet struck his radio microphone that was clipped to his shirt. Authorities searched nearby buildings for several hours Tuesday, including the Shirkmere Apartment. They say the shot may have come from above.
"We have a basic idea of where this bullet was fired from," says Deputy Police Chief Robert Lee. "But distance, we're not sure of that at this point."
Lee says witnesses are going to be the key to help piece this puzzle together. "Nothing is too minor or insignificant to report to us. Even if you just heard a shot," says Lee.
Lee also says may have been a deliberate attempt against the officer's life. Because of that, the department is asking that we not release the officers name. They're worried that whoever shot him might try again.
"This is a very, very isolated incident," Lee says. "Wichita is a very safe city and something like this happens extremely rarely, but it happened yesterday."
