UPDATE: Thursday, August 2, 2012
A man is expected to recover from injuries after a shooting outside a south Wichita restaurant.
It happened in the 2100 block of S. Broadway around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Lt. Scott Heimerman said a man thought his car may have been stolen, and he spotted the vehicle in the restaurant's parking lot. The man confronted people inside the car, started a dispute, and then fired multiple shots.
A 36-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the face. A 55-year-old man was also hurt from bullet fragments. The 36-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but has since improved.
One of the bullets hit Mike's Steakhouse Restaurant. No one inside the building was hurt.
Officers arrested a 48-year-old man at the scene. He was booked on two counts of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated assault.
Heimerman said the suspect also did not have a permit to carry the gun.
Police believe a family member may have used the vehicle without the owner's knowledge.
"The suspect overreacted considerably," Heimerman said.

A man is in the hospital and another in jail after a shooting outside a south Wichita restaurant Wednesday afternoon.
Police were called to Mike's Steakhouse in the 2100 block of South Broadway about 5 p.m. When they arrived, they found a man with at least one gunshot wound in the parking lot of the business. The man, who police believe is in his 30s, was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition.
"We have several witnesses who told us there was some type of disturbance in the parking lot of the business," said Capt. Max Tenbrook of the Wichita Police Department. "We were able to identify a suspect. We do have a suspect in custody."
That suspect -- a man -- was taken into custody without a struggle. The gun police believe was used in the shooting was found nearby.
"He was identified by witnesses and I think he pretty much was there waiting for us," Tenbrook said of the suspect.
Detectives and officers were still working to figure out what the argument was about. Tenbrook stressed the shooting happened outside the restaurant and it is unclear whether the two men involved were even patrons of the business.
"We don't know that it really had anything to do with the restaurant," he said. "We're just sorting through that. There was some type of disturbance and, for some reason, the victim and the suspect were at this location."
Police did not believe any of the people who witnessed the shooting were involved in the argument, but that was something investigators were also still working to figure out.
"I believe some of them were with the victim, so we're still sorting out who knew who and why they knew them and why they were here," Tenbrook said.
With much of the restaurant's parking lot blocked off, police combed the area for evidence and looked for whatever eyewitness information they could find.
"We are right now in the process of talking to witnesses, determining the scene," Tenbrook said. "We'll try talking to the suspect to see what we can determine."
An employee of a local utility was working nearby when the shooting happened. The man said he was not authorized to speak with KAKE News on-camera, but he said he heard two gunshots and police were on the scene, what seemed to him, seconds later.
