Someone broke into the West Wichita home by tunneling through the garage wall. Homeowners say they heard something around 4am Sunday morning. They went downstairs and discovered the hole where the burglar got in. The person got away with about $40 worth of items. But how can you protect yourself now that holiday thieves are looking for their next victim?

Wichita Police say first and foremost keep your doors and windows closed and locked. Try to keep at least one light on so any would be thieves might think someone is home.

Police also say this is the time of year to protect your property by photographing jewelry and writing down the serial numbers of things like TVs and VCRs. You might also think about engraving your property with an identifying mark like your name or address.

Doing these things may protect you in the future, if another thief decides to go to their own extreme measures to get into your house.
