Wichita police have arrested a woman after leading authorities on a brief chase, and ended in a crash.
It happened on the Harry Street bridge over I-135 just after midnight Saturday. Officers responded to the report of a suspicious activity in the 1000 block of E. Gilbert, but the car took off after police arrived.
About two minutes later, the car ran a red light on the bridge, hitting another vehicle. The driver of the second car, Juan Santiago, 23, was taken to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Officers arrested Crystal McKee, 35, after she received treatment at the hospital. Police said her passenger, 23-year-old Jeffrey Jones, left the hospital against medical advice. Authorities said he remains outstanding.
Investigators said the car McKee was driving was reported stolen after a felony robbery last week. The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the chase and crash.
Police said this is the 106 evade and elude case this year. Officers worked 220 cases in 2011. Of those, 32 ended in crashes. There were 185 police pursuits with 21 crashes in 2010.

A couple of people who tried to run from police might be regretting that choice. Just after midnight, someone called police to report a couple of suspicious characters sitting on the street. Officers went to check.
“The driver and passenger of the vehicle left abruptly,” says Wichita Police Sgt. Roger Runft. “Tried to stop the vehicle, but they refused to stop.”
The chase didn’t last all that long, but it ended when the car ran a red light and crashed into another driver on the Harry Street bridge over I-135.
Runft says, “A citizen was pulling away from the ramp through a green light. The pursuing vehicle ran through the red light and struck the vehicle broadside.”
A driver of the innocent vehicle, 22-year-old Juan Santiago, was critically injured. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
It turns out the car involved in the chase had been reported stolen. The driver, 35-year-old Crystal McKee, and the passenger, 23-year-old Jeffrey Jones, were also taken to a hospital for treatment.
