Viral Video - Monkey See Monkey Do

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

A young chimpanzee at the Sedgwick County Zoo found a new friend with a 6-month-old baby.

Cindy Little and her son, Preston, sat down at the chimpanzee window during a recent visit to the zoo. The baby quickly caught the attention of Mabusu, a 2-year-old chimp. The two began playing, even mimicking each other, through the glass.

“The monkey was hitting the glass really hard,” Cindy said. “But it made it adorable because of the way they were just interacting.”

The chimpanzee was even making Preston laugh. The family caught the monkey-see-monkey-do game on camera. But they weren’t the only ones recording the monkey business.

“We did gather a crowd with a lot of people recording it, laughing and cutting up,” Cindy said.

Cindy said she and her family left the window so other children could interact with Mabusu.

“When we did, the monkey got depressed, so everyone told us to come back,” she said.

Zoo officials said Mabusu was excited to see a young face. The next-youngest chimpanzee at the zoo is his 15-year-old sister.

“He enjoys interacting with the public,” said Devin Bailey, chimpanzee and orangutan keeper. “He loves to play and it’s always good seeing him interacting with others.”
