Ellsworth County officials say a Lyons man had died as the result of an apparent drowning. It happened early Saturday afternoon at Kanopolis Lake.
Sheriff Tracy Ploutz says John Freeman III, 40, was camping at the lake with a friend. He left the campsite around 12:30 p.m. to go swimming alone in the cove.
A short time later, Freeman was spotted floating in the water by passersby. Ploutz says witnesses tried to revive him with CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The death is under investigation but officials say it appears to be accidental. An autopsy is pending.
