TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- A Fort Riley accused in a bank robbery over the weekend is dead from a gunshot wound he suffered after a chase and standoff with police.

Authorities say 21-year-old John Hayden shot himself in the head. He had been in critical condition at a Topeka hospital since the incident.

A police spokesman says Hayden died yesterday at the hospital.

Hayden was a private first class from Port Deposit, Maryland. He was initially believed to be from Pennsylvania.

He was arrested Friday after a four-hour standoff that shut down
Interstate 70 near Paxico, west of Topeka. Officers had pursued him
after his car was linked to a robbery at a Topeka bank.

Authorities say Hayden shot at officers, but they did not fire back.
