It may look like a lawnchair on wheels, but it's actually a special wheelchair. 10-Year-old Matthew Wilke came up with the idea, and he had special motivation. Matthew's Grandfather was battling cancer and was too weak to walk.
The wheelchair he needed was too expensive and impractical. "I just thought I wanted to help him so I made it", said Wilke.
Matthew spent hours researching, developing and building the simple reclining chair. The chair won him national honors in a young inventors competition. But the night before Matthew could deliver the chair, his Grandfather died. "I feel he's pretty proud up in heaven right now. Everybody else is proud of me, my family too. I'm just proud of myself,” said Wilke.
Matthew has no plans to mass-produce his chair. But if someone is interested, he's willing to share the blueprints.
