ST. MARY'S, Kan. (AP) -- The Kansas State High School Activities Association is looking into an incident earlier this month when a woman referee was told she could not officiate a boys high school basketball game.

Michelle Campbell said was told Feb. 2nd she could not ref a game at St. Mary's Academy in St. Mary's because the school didn't believe in women being in a position of authority over boys.

There's no comment today from the school, which is owned and
operated by the Society of St. Pius the tenth, which follows older Roman Catholic laws. Its leader was excommunicated by the Pope in
the late 1980s.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association says St. Mary's is on the association's list of approved schools. But wants the school to explain its policy about women referees before it takes any action.

please dont don't make judgments off this "Catholic" school for they are run by the Society of St. Puis X, which is not in full communion with the Church. The pope would not indorse this rule or idea, nor would most priest or educated Catholics. Also, have you ever heard of a red herring, for pulling the priest scandal into this is irrelevent. One last thing, point of information, the 22nd century is the years 2201-2300, which brings to mind checking your sources :)

This is simple - they have every right to not allow female refs and the the KSHSAA has every right to kick their Medieval butts out of approved competition including playoffs, etc.

It's based on the biblical epistle of the Apostle Paul to Timothy, one of his students. It's also the basis for why many Christian denominations, including Catholics and the Baptist mofia (sic) do not ordain women ministers. To call it ignorance, when it is based on sincerely held religious beliefs is, itself, ignorant. Most 'practicing Catholics' know little about the bible, so they've probably never heard of it. As far as the priest boy molestation scandal, there's no reason to drag St Mary Academy into that unless you have some evidence that such events occurred there AND they did nothing about them.

While I support this private school's right to make these sort of antiquated rules, I would say this is an excellent example of why religion is slowly becoming outmoded and unnecessary to humanity as a whole. Fundamentalist sexism and other similar religious tenets only serve to divide humankind. Weren't Americans like the ones in St. Mary's decrying how backwards and 11th-Centuryish the taliban was in 2001? Who's the troglodyte now?

Does this school only have male teachers? Would not a teacher have authority over her male students?

and how would you know what sex they are it's anonymous and citizen.

I am speechless that such an act of ignorance could happen in the 21st century.

Here we go again. I always thought we were in the 22 century...where men and women were equal. Besides arent Ref's "Zebra's" to begin with? They rule the game's infractions, irrespective of their gender!

The town I grew up in here in Kansas had the first woman refree EVER in the state. That was back in the late 50's-early 60's!! She never felt authoritive, other than her calls were final.

Geezzs. I'm a practicing Catholic and have never heard of this type of crap with ref. a sporting event. Needs to stop.
