Obama Wins Easily in Kansas Caucus Save Email Print

Barack Obama rolled to an easy victory tonight in the Kansas Democratic presidential contest, as large crowds of voters overwhelmed some caucus sites.

With 100 percent of Kansas Democratic Presidential caucuses reporting, Obama won 313 of Kansas’ 436 Congressional District delegates. The remaining 123 went to Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Congressional District delegates will travel to their respective Congressional District Conventions, to be held on April 12, 2008.

More than 37,000 Kansans turned out for the Democratic Presidential caucuses. Unofficial totals showed 73 percent of Kansans caucused for Obama and 25 percent caucused for Clinton.

Tonight’s results will eventually determine the allocation of 32 of Kansas’ national delegates at the Democratic National Convention in August. Unofficial tallies show Obama capturing 23 of the pledged national delegates and Clinton taking the remaining nine pledged national delegates.

Twenty-one of these national delegates will be confirmed at the Congressional District conventions in April, and the remaining 11 national delegates will be confirmed at the Kansas Democratic Party State Convention on May 17, 2008.

Obama gave Kansas an unusual amount of attention and picked up the endorsement of Governor Sebelius.

In Johnson and Douglas counties, the party opened secondary
sites to handle overflow crowds.

A line outside the Sedgwick County Courthouse stretched for more
than two blocks, with a few voters waiting two hours in rain and
blowing snow.

Why would anyone think he gave an unusual amount of attention to Kansas when he has family ties to Kansas?

I was born and raised in Kansas and I can't believe some of the ignorant responses to this article. First, know where your caucuses are held and what time, it isn't hard information to find out. Also, Barack Obama is and always has been a Christian. I know my candidates and voted for Barack. How closed minded is the statement "nobody in America wants a woman president"? (from colorado) I hope these are not examples of the majority of Kansan's thoughts. I'm embarrased for you. That being said, I was extremely glad to see the numbers of voters that did know where to vote and did! Its a wonderful mess when there are such large turn outs that the caucuses run out of forms! I was glad to hear of the numbers of people who were strong enough to switch parties also. You have a wonderful Governor in Kathleen Sebelius too. There is great hope for Kansas!

The last thing this country needs is a black president. They are alowed to say whatever they want about white people but when a white person makes a remark about a black person they get in trouble. You see african americans telling rude jokes about whites on tv all the time. The country is not ready for a black president.

Shawn, how can you say nobody in America wants a woman president? Hillary has won caucuses and primaries in a number of states. You might get your head checked. That said, I'm supporting BARCK! [FIRED UP!]

Hey Kim R. I have to agree with Jon, you should have read the instructions. And to JMS. I dont care if he is Muslum, I do care that he is the best canidate for the job.

I know you can't judge ones honesty on a name, but do you suppose anyone is over their laughing at us? Picture this. Two musslims sitting against a wall looking at the front page of an American newspaper headline "Obama for president". They turn and laugh to one another (Only in America would they be hunting Osama, but voting for Obama to run their country) It does sound like a 'Is there something wrong with this picture?' kind of thing doesn't it.

I would like to congratulate both of the candidates for stickin with it for this long, and a special congrats to Obama for his win as the democratic candidate. I would also like to say that next term Clinton might do better in the elections.

Posted by: Shawn Location: Colorado on Feb 5, 2008 at 09:26 PM
I think that Barack Obama is the canidate for president not Hillary Clinton. Nobody in America wants a woman president. However we will find out in November.

Why is everyone for the Muslim?

Posted by: Linda Location: Colby on Feb 5, 2008 at 07:56 PM
Why would we have to go to the next County to participate? With weather conditions, etc. there is no way.

Posted by: Jon on Feb 5, 2008 at 06:03 PM
Not to sound mean but you should have looked at the information the Democrats where giving you on how and when you would vote.
