It's not too cold to go outside for a walk or jog after you get off work. But it's probably too dark.

If you're not ready to take your workout indoors quite yet, you need to take street smarts outdoors.

Wichita runner Tammy Ritchie says, "'Im a lot more cautious at night because you know people that are driving they're just not looking for you know runners on the sidewalks."

That's why Tammy is reflective all over -- from her shoes on up. And she wears a flashing light that makes her even easier to see.

Wichita running expert Clark Ensz says you have to take extra steps to stay safe after dark. Always pay attention to your surroundings, watch out for traffic, and make sure motorists see you.

Ensz says, "If you've ever come up on someone wearing reflective material they stand out really easily from a long way away and what that does is gives the automobiles a chance to avoid you. If you're wearing nothing but dark clothing, nothing reflective, they don't see you until a lot of times it's too late."

Cars can suddenly appear out of nowhere it seems, so make sure they are not surprised you are there.

Once you have your reflective gear, and you're easily visible, here's another way to be safe. Don't walk or jog at the same time or along the exact same path every day.
