UPDATE: Thursday, May 10, 2012
The northbound lanes of a busy Wichita interstate are back open after
a truck hauling machinery struck the bridge.
It happened on the 25th bridge over Interstate-235 just after 9 a.m. Thursday.
Kansas Department of Transportation officials said a semi truck was hauling a backhoe, when the truck failed to clear the overpass.
“The bucket or elbow for the bucket struck the front part, then rebounded and hit the center of the bridge,” Susan Turner, KDOT Field Engineering Administrator said.
Several chunks of concrete fell onto the highway, but no one was hurt. Turner said one piece of rebar was also broken in the accident. The top part of the bridge was not damaged.
Crews close the right-hand lane of I-235 to clean up debris. Turner said repair work will be complete at a later date.
KDOT fixed a similar repair on the 25th street bridge earlier this year.
