Wichita Fire Department investigators now believe smoking was the cause of a fire that heavily damaged two semi trailers near downtown Wichita late Tuesday night.

That fire was reported about 10:15 p.m. in the 200 block of North Ohio, just east of Old Town.

Fire Investigations Captain Stuart Bevis says it is believed a cigarette left behind by someone who had been using the trailers as a makeshift home is to blame for the fire.

A fire and a series of small explosions kept residents of a neighborhood just east of downtown Wichita awake late Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called too the 200 block of North Ohio about 10:15 p.m.

When they got there, fire crews found two semi trailers on fire. It took those firefighters several minutes to get the fire under control. Wichita Fire Department Battalion Chief Bobby Wolfe says that was likely due to the materials stored in the trailer, which he believed were some type of metal.

The fire and police departments are also checking into reports that someone may have been using the trailers as a makeshift home by sleeping underneath them on a regular basis.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and police are working to figure out whether the man who reportedly slept under the trailers was there when the fire started.
