A man who admitted setting his 10-year-old step-daughter on fire has been sentenced to life in prison.

Chris Newberry pleaded guilty to one count of attempted first degree murder, five counts of arson and one count of rape in September of 2009.

In Sedgwick County court Thursday, a judge sentenced Newberry to life in prison, plus 165 months.

Prosecutors said Newberry raped his 10-year-old stepdaughter numerous times over the course of a year. But on March 14, 2009, they said he first carried his biological daughter out of the bedroom she shared with the victim. He then sprayed lighter fluid on his stepdaughter and set her on fire.

The victim has undergone numerous surgeries since the incident three years ago.

The girl's mother, Bridgit Newberry, pleaded guilty to aggravated child endangerment. She was sentenced to probation in October of 2010.

Chris Newberry will be eligible for parole in 25 years.
