UPDATE: Tuesday, April 24, 2012

A local family managed to escape a house fire safely, after flames broke out at their northeast Wichita home.

Firefighters were called to the scene in the 6900 block of Timberon Lane around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Sedgwick County units assisted Wichita crews who were also on the scene of a large building fire nearby.

Div. Chief Carl Cox, Sedgwick County Fire, said crews arrived to find the back of the home on fire.

"One of the challenges we had was the fire had extended from the back of the home into the attic space," Cox said.

Firefighters cut a hole into the roof to help get the smoke under control. The smoke and fire caused significant damage throughout the home.

Cox said the damage is estimated at $80,000 to $100,000. The fire started on the home's deck, but the cause is under investigation.

Three adults and a baby were inside the home when the fire started. No one was hurt.
