Sedgwick County Zoo Loses A Legend

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

The Sedgwick County Zoo is remembering one of its own after a beloved attraction has passed away.

Officials said Eugene, an Eastern black rhinoceros died at the age of 32. He came to Sedgwick County Zoo in 1981 from Cincinnati Zoo. Eugene has fathered many over the years and is survived by three. Bibi, our female Eastern black rhinoceros remains in good health at age 14.

Black rhinos can live to be 30-35 years in the wild and more than 45 years in human care.

The Zoo said it remains dedicated to the care and conservation of Eastern black rhinos and will continue to support rhino programs.
