BBB Warns Of Text Message Scam

Wednesday, April 04, 2012

Several mobile users in Wichita have received text messages that officials say is a twist in a classic email phishing scam.

The Better Business Bureau said consumers are being alerted via text message the mobile user has won a free gift card. The text instructs people to click on a link and enter personal information.

In one, the text reads "You just won a free $1000 Walmart Gift Card, enter "1000" at LINK." In another, it says: "Walmart $1000 gift card for the first 1000 users to go to LINK and enter code 2938." The texts use different URLs, including:

promocenterdaily.com/walmart gift
promocenter.ws/walmart
walmartgift.mobi

The agency said the smishing scam is an effort to steal credit card numbers and expose victims to identity theft.

Walmart issued a statement saying the sites are not owned, operated by, or affiliated with the retail company.
