Federal prosecutors are asking a federal magistrate in court papers to keep a Kansas physician and his nurse wife in jail pending trial.
Dr. Stephen J. Schneider and his wife, nurse Linda K. Schneider, are facing a 34-count indictment charging them for operating a "pill mill." The scheme is alleged to have directly caused the overdose deaths of at least four patients.
Court papers say they were arrested Wednesday after they engaged
in an almost six-hour attempt to elude surveillance teams. The
government wants them kept in jail or at least have the judge order
electronic monitoring and require the doctor to surrender his medical license.
Schneider and his wife appeared for the first time in federal court Friday afternoon.
