KAKE News has learned the man wanted for killing an El Dorado teenager is in custody. Israel Mireles, 24, is behind bars on homicide charges, suspected in the death of 18-year-old Emily Sander.
Mireles was arrested by Mexican Authorities working with U.S. Marshals in Melchor-Muzquiz, Mexico Wednesday morning. Melchor-Muzquiz is just southwest of Del Rio, Texas. Mireles was staying at the home of a family member in Mexico.
U.S. authorities are working with Mexican authorities to extradite Mireles to Kansas. Mireles faces a charge of capital murder in Butler County - the first charge filed since the death penalty was reinstated. But due to his capture in Mexico, Kansas authorities will not seek the death penalty, in order to assure his extradition. He will be detained under Mexican law for 60 days until Kansas can extradite him. Mexico usually doesn't allow the extradition of one of its citizens if that person would face the death penalty.
Authorities say Mireles raped and sodomized Emily Sander before he killed her. She disappeared the day after Thanksgiving - last seen leaving an El Dorado bar with Mireles. Her body was found east of El Dorado days later.
If convicted of capital murder, Mireles will be sentenced to life without parole.
Mireles was believed to be traveling with his pregnant, teenage girlfriend, Victoria Martens. Authorities say she is in Mexico and not in custody. She was not at the same home as Mireles at the time of his arrest. Family members have spoken to her. She is not charged in the case.
Butler County authorities indicate they have no legal recourse to force her return to Kansas.
