Dr. George Tiller is asking the Kansas Supreme Court to prevent a grand jury from convening to investigate abortions at his Wichita clinic.
The grand jury in Sedgwick County is scheduled to convene Tuesday. Abortion opponents forced the county to create the grand jury by collecting signatures on a petition.
The petition accused Tiller of breaking state restrictions on late-term abortions. Attorney General Paul Morrison has filed 19 misdemeanor charges against the doctor, but many abortion opponents believe Tiller ought to be prosecuted even more aggressively.
Tiller filed a petition Friday with the Supreme Court to keep the grand jury from meeting. No hearing has been scheduled.
