Approximately 45 horses in the custody of the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office are now available for placement to new homes. Individuals interested in obtaining ownership of one or more of these horses are encouraged to apply for placement approval.
The horses were seized by the Sheriff’s Office on July 30th, 2010 as a result of the execution of a search warrant at Winding Roads Equine Rescue and Retirement facility. near Waverly, Kan. The warrant was issued in response to complaints of neglect of the horses on the property.
While a small number of the horses had to be euthanized due to poor health, nearly 30 have already been placed with new owners. Approximately 45 horses remain, and they represent a wide range of ages, sizes and breeds.
“These horses deserve to go to good homes and be loved,” said Coffey County Sheriff Randy Rogers. “My goal is to find placement for all of them, and the court has given me 21 days to do so.”
Karen Everhart, owner of Horse Calls, LLC and executive director of Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement, Inc., has been designated in overseeing the placement of the horses. Individuals interested in being selected for placement will be required to submit an application and undergo a facility inspection prior to being granted ownership of any horse.
To learn more about the available horses or to obtain an application for placement, contact Everhart at 316-648-5082 or horsecalls@gmail.com. A copy of the application is available by clicking this link: Placement-App for WRER-Horses
