A Wichita woman recenly lost over one hundred pounds... dancing.
Crystal Wiley lives a fit, healthy lifestyle, but it hasn't always been that way.
"I weighed over three hundred pounds," Wiley said.
A photo from a family vacation that was her breaking point.
"I was mortified," Wiley said. "And it was at that point that I realized I needed to make a change."
Her weight-loss solution came in the form of Zumba classes.
"The first class was hard, of course, with as much weight as I had on my body at the time," Wiley said. "I couldn't even get through twenty minutes."
But eventually the classes became easier, and the results she was seeing became motivation to continue.
"I kept going, and every week I got a little bit better, I got a little bit further through the class," Wiley said. "After about three or four weeks, I was able to do the whole hour and it's been non-stop ever since."
These days, she's in class at least five days a week but not as a member of the class. Now, she's the teacher.
"If it gives them that little bit of motivation to feel like they can just get through that workout, then I know I've done my job," Wiley said.
Inspired by her own weight-loss journey, one of the classes Cystal teaches is targeted at those who are overweight.
"There's no jumping, there's no reggaeton, because I know what it feels like to do a traditional workout and have all that extra weight on your body and it's hard," Wiley said.
It's her way of passing on the power of Zumba.
"Zumba is a lot of fun. You can lose a lot of weight, and you can have a great time while doing it," Wiley said. "And who knew that it would feel so good to be able to sweat, right?"
The plus class is available at Wheels Studio on Thursday nights.
There are no membership fees, but you will need five dollars to get into the class.
