Wichita, Kan. -- In response to the recent outbreak of Measles in the Wichita-area, the Sedgwick County Health Department will be holding a vaccination clinic this weekend.

The county confirmed there were two new cases in Sedgwick County Tuesday. One of the cases has been confirmed by school officials to be a WSU student who is taking summer classes at the university.

WSU officials say faculty, staff and students who may have had contact with the student have been notified.

The clinic is intended to bring residents up to date on their vaccinations. Children receive their first dose of the vaccine at 12 to 15 months and then again between 4 and 6 years old to help prevent contracting the illnesses.

If you think you or your child may have been exposed to the Measles, do not attend this clinic. Instead contact your health care provider or the health department's Measles information line at 316-660-7424.

Symptoms of the Measles include:
Blotchy rash on the skin, which spreads from the head to the trunk then to the lower extremities
Runny nose
Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
Feeling run down, achy
Tiny white spots with bluish-white centers inside the mouth

The health department notes that if you have been vaccinated or were born before 1957, you are unlikely to get Measles. If you are unsure whether or not you or your child have received the vaccination, you are asked to call your health care provider. If you think you have been exposed to the Measles, do not go to the emergency room or to your doctor's office. Instead, contact your doctor's office for instructions.

The clinic will be held Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2716 W. Central, Wichita. There will be no out-of-pocket fees charged. However Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance will be filed if available.
