There's a surprising health alert involving the Kansas State Fair. And it comes from Kansas State University scientists.

If you get too close to the pigs in Hutchinson, you could be risking influenza. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns pigs could carry the H3N2 virus, and pass it to humans through sneezing or body contact.

"It shows maybe a little fever, but nobody knows," KSU Zoonotic Disease Expert Juergen Richt said in a news release from the university. "It sheds influenza into the air, through the environment, aerosols."

To stay protected, don't take food or drink to the pig areas. Children's items such as strollers and pacifiers should be kept outside as well. And if you touch a pig, wash your hands thoroughly without touching your mouth or nose.
