Tired of dealing with insurance companies, one local doctor's office is receiving national attention for pioneering a cash only business model.
It's a strategy known as Concierge Family Practice, or Direct Primary Care, and the office, Atlas M.D., runs off of a monthly patient membership fee.
"We're hoping that we really truly can make some transformative changes on a national scale," said Physician Doug Nunamaker.
The cost ranges from ten to one hundred dollars a month depending on age, but patients are still encouraged to carry a high deductible insurance plan to cover large emergencies.
CEO Josh Umbehr says one of the main reasons he wanted to switch to this style of practice is to give patients more individual attention.
He claims that offices which accept insurance have to hire more employees, and therefore see more patients to cover the overhead.
"I think right now doctors are working harder not smarter," Umbehr said. "The idea of seeing 40, 50, 60 plus patients a day means each patient isn't really being cared for as well as they could be."
Patients at Atlas M.D. have 24 hour access to the physicians. They can call, email, or text their doctor at any time.
Also, because the office is sustainable off of the monthly membership, prescriptions are sold to patients at wholesale prices.
While the business style might not be the perfect option for everyone, it is an option you can consider.
