Chances are you know someone with Alzheimer's disease as 5.3 million Americans suffer from it.

Perhaps you've also heard of Frank Carney, one of Wichita's most successful businessmen. He's the co-founder of Pizza Hut, Genghis Grill, as well as local Papa John's locations, among countless others.

Frank was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about a year ago. In spite of the disease, he is still active. He still exercises on a treadmill and still plays golf.

However Frank's family knows that unless there is a new treatment or a cure, that won't last. That's why Frank finally agreed to let people know he is an Alzheimer’s patient. He is also volunteering to take part in a clinical trial.

His wife Janie, said he wanted to be a part in the clinical trial to help others.

“He said, ‘Then we have to do it, no questions,’” Janie said.

Frank, his family and company, along with Papa John's Pizza franchises are also helping out, sponsoring this year's "Walk To End Alzheimer's.”

"It is hard enough as it is here personally, and we have just begun,” Frank said. “But to see what others are going through as the stages progress, and the lack of help.”

Janie said that hopefully with enough research, there may be a new successful Alzheimer’s treatment for people like Frank and perhaps a cure for others.

"We are not walking for Frank,” she said. “We are walking with him because he is walking for others.”

The “Walk To End Alzheimer’s” will take place at Wichita State University Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
