KDHE: Third Patient Tests Positive For Hepatitis C

A third Hays Medical Center patient has tested positive for Hepatitis C after a former employee was accused infecting patients with the virus.

David Kwiatkoski is accused of injecting himself with syringes, then refilling and replacing them. Kwiatkowski has Hepatitis C and passed it on to hospital patients who were injected with his used syringes. He was arrested July 19 in New Hampshire and charged with illegally obtaining drugs and tampering with a consumer product.

Kwiatkowski has worked in 13 hospitals in eight states, including HaysMed in Hays, Kansas. The Hays Daily News reports he worked at worked in the cardiac catheterization laboratory at HaysMed from May 24 to Sept. 22, 2010.

The third patient was identified by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Tuesday.

The KDHE said that 474 HaysMed patients could have been exposed to Hepatitis C. More than 350 people have been tested for the virus. At least three have tested positive for the strain.
