Hospitals in Wichita are near capacity with patients suffering from influenza and other flu-like illnesses.

Sedgwick County Health Department Director Claudia Blackburn updated county commissioners on the flu during a meeting Wednesday morning.

Many of those seeking treatment for the virus are elderly residents. The health department recommends that people in that age range not take care of patients suffering from the flu, as older residents are more at risk.

Blackburn said H3N2 is the main flu virus affecting the country this year, and the virus responsible for most flu cases in Sedgwick County.

She said city and county resident can still get vaccinated, and that the current vaccine is 60 percent effective against H3N2.

The vaccine is available at the health department for uninsured adults and children who qualify, as well as pharmacies around the area.

More information from the county is available here.
