University of Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little today announced that the university will end the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products on all campuses as of July 1.

"KU is known for its research into human health, and the science on the damage caused by tobacco use is well-established," said Gray-Little. "It's therefore consistent with the work done here and the values of the university to end all sales of tobacco products on campus."

"While some will point out that students and employees can buy these products elsewhere, I think it is important to make it clear that the university does not encourage the use of tobacco and will not sell it on campus," she continued.

The KU Medical Center already prohibits the sale of tobacco products on its campuses. The policy announced today will cover all facilities owned or operated by KU and its affiliated corporations. Smoking is not permitted in KU buildings, including residence halls.
