Reno County health officials are concerned about a national shortage of rabies vaccines for humans.
Reno County Health Department director Judy Seltzer told county commissioners Wednesday that the shortage is a concern because there are a lot of animal bites occurring in the county.
Health department officials said they see an average of five animal bite cases a week.
There's no shortage of the rabies vaccine for pets, and county officials are advising pet owners to have their animals vaccinated.
The shortage was caused because one of the two main suppliers of rabies vaccine for the U.S. is renovating its production facilities and the other wasn't able to meet the increased demand.
