Military veterans in rural areas would have access to medical care closer to home under a measure expected to pass the U.S. House.

The bill would let veterans living in remote areas get treatment at a local hospital or doctor's office instead of having to drive long distances to Veterans Affairs facilities.

Kansas Rep. Jerry Moran says he introduced the bill to make it easier for veterans in Kansas and other rural states to seek medical care.

The three-year pilot program would apply to veterans living at least 60 miles from a VA primary care facility, 120 miles from a VA hospital or 240 miles from a VA specialized care facility.

The House was expected to vote on the bill Tuesday night. The Senate has not yet considered the measure.
