Infant massage is a growing trend in hospitals today. Now, Wesley Medical Center is using an infant massage called “The Listening Touch Massage” to help premature babies through their developmental process.

Baby Adilynn was born five weeks premature and weighs only four pounds. Doctors say she is the perfect candidate for the neonatal massage program.

Using four kinds of firm but gentle strokes, experts say the massage helps growth and weight gain, improves digestion and promotes bonding between parents and their babies.

Massage is a healing method Wesley has used for many years, but the program geared toward teaching parents the specific techniques was only launched three months ago.

“Parents are really interested in learning, so we’ve felt great about parents’ response to the program,” Pediatric Physical Therapist Jan Arnold said.

Wesley educators say they are thrilled with the success of the program so far, hoping it gives parents another tool in raising a healthy baby.
