Summer break is underway and local emergency rooms are seeing more kids with injuries from bike accidents. As always, the biggest concern is head injuries.

Although the number of bikers wearing helmets has increased, there are still many who do not wear them. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 716 bikers died on U.S. roads in 2008.

Teena Johnson, the Trauma Outreach Coordinator at Wesley Medical Center, says they are seeing many injuries that could be prevented. Most involve concussions and head injuries bike, skateboarding and other wheeled sports where helmets were not used.

Johnson adds that children should not only wear a helmet, but it must fit properly and be worn right.

“You want the helmet centered, not tiled backwards, just above the eyebrow. You don’t want it to move forward and it should be buckled as well,” Johnson says.
