If your teenager wanted to start taking babysitting jobs, would you feel confident they could handle any situation, even emergencies?

For Grace Haffley, babysitting is a great way to make some extra cash, but she knows it's much more than just a summer job.

"It's a really big responsibility no matter who you are, but still it's really fun and it'll get you some money," Haffley says.

Grace took the beginners babysitting class at Wesley Medical Center, hoping it would help prepare her for any situation. The class is aimed at 11 to 15-year-olds and helps to provide vital information that can make both parents and babysitters more comfortable.

"Confidence is very important and by taking this class they learn the skills they need to have so maybe they won't call their mom and say help," Family Life Educator Diane Solorio says.

The seven-hour course covers everything from important questions to ask parents, to crying babies and unruly toddlers, as well as CPR.

Although many of the teens taking the class have had some babysitting experience, they often discover there is much more to learn about the job.

"I didn't even know that I was supposed to carry a babysitting bag or if they don't have a home phone, to bring your own phone and have an emergency number," Haffley says.

These extra tips are what Wesley child educators are hoping they can pass on to the next generation of childcare providers.

"I would still encourage kids to come and take this class because there is always information that you didn't know, and I've learned from the kids every time I teach the class because they've had experiences that perhaps I haven't had...They can learn from each other," Solorio says.

Several babysitting classes are available this fall. You can find more information about class times and registration by clicking here.
