Volunteers took to canoes and kayaks to help cleanup the little Arkansas River Saturday.

Several organizations including the Wichita Paddlers, Arkansas River Coalition, Kansas Canoe & Kayak Association, and the River City helped clean the river.

Volunteers say most of the litter included drink cups and fast food containers that may have been thrown from someone’s car.

“So pick up the trash in your neighborhood as well because it ends up in the river. It's hard for the wildlife here and its ugly,” says volunteer Marcia Pike.

The effort was part of the "National River Cleanup" initiative.
