Snow falling usually gets people dreaming of a white Christmas, but what are the chances of a white Christmas in Wichita and how many times has Wichita seen a white Christmas?

Good questions.

First of all, official weather gurus at the places where weather records are kept only recognize a white Christmas if there is one inch or more of snow on the ground, so we will keep this official.

At first check, it would seem promising that a white Christmas in Wichita would be likely. December is the month when we see the most snow on average, about four inches a year since 1981. But actually, a white Christmas in the city of Wichita is quite rare.

According to the national weather service, there have only been 13 white Christmases in Wichita. The weather experts also say there is only a 10 percent chance in any given year that Wichita will see a white Christmas. The likelihood of snow falling in Wichita on Dec. 25 is slim to none.
