WICHITA, Kan.-- The U.S. News and World Report ranked Wichita East High School as the best public high school in Kansas.

"One of the things that separate us from a lot of other schools in Kansas is the diversity that we have in our building," said Principal Ken Thiessen.

East High has the state's largest student body with 2,263 students in the current academic year. It is home to the International Baccalaureate Program and English for Speakers of Other Languages Program.

"I think East High School is the best high school because of how diverse," said Joey Pepoon, student. "I think our clubs are amazing and our academics are stellar."

Of the 312 high schools in Kansas, two were awarded silver medals in the 2014 U.S. News Best High Schools rankings, which included Wichita East High School and Liberal Senior High School.

The criteria for the rankings included overall student performance on state-mandated assessments, effectiveness of schools in educating black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students, and how well schools prepared students for college-level course work through Advanced Placement and IB exam results.
