High taxes and the new health care plan are two things Mike Pompeo says he wants to repeal as he heads to Washington.

Wednesday, for the first time since election night, Pompeo sat down with KAKE News to talk plans for the future of Kansas. He's one of the 80 Republican 'freshmen' heading to Washington with a mission.

"I think there was a very strong message sent November 2nd that the ways of Speaker Pelosi and President Obama were not what Kansans wanted and not what Americans wanted," said 4th District Congressman-Elect Mike Pompeo.

Keeping tax rates from rising, and repealing what has been dubbed "Obamacare" are two of Pompeo's immediate goals.

"They believe that we just didn't understand the health care law, we get that it's not good for Kansas, it's not good for job growth, it's not good for doctors or patients," said Pompeo.

But as he stands up to Democrats in Washington, he says he knows he's representing Democrats in Kansas, along with the other 40% of voters who didn't mark Pompeo's name election day.

"I am deeply cognizant of that. I'm working very hard every day to represent every single person here in Kansas, whether they voted for me or not," said Pompeo.

He says he'll do that by making the business environment more friendly. He also wants to help close the deal on the Tanker contract.

"It may take just a little bit to get us back there, but I'm confident that the aviation industry will continue to thrive in South Central Kansas," said Pompeo.

Now as he leaves Kansas for Washington D.C., he has a message for voters, following one of the state's most competitive races in this November election.

"Mike Pompeo will certainly go to Washington D.C. and work hard for the very things he told them he'd do," said Pompeo.

Freshman orientation for new members of Congress starts this weekend, lasting four to five days. Then members will be sworn-in in January.
