Teen Arrested After Maize South High School Bomb Threat

An 18-year-old was arrested at Maize South High School this morning in connection with an emailed bomb threat received Wednesday.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.

The following is the message sent from the Maize Superintendent Doug Powers to parents today:

Dear Maize Parents,

The Maize USD 266 Police Department has been conducting an investigation for the bomb threat that was made at MSHS yesterday, November 3. As a result of the investigation, an 18 year old suspect was arrested and booked into Sedgwick County Jail this morning.

The MSHS and Early Childhood students and staff are to be commended for the efficient and effective manner in which they exited and re-entered the building. Please join us in thanking your children for their appropriate behavior. I would also like to thank the law enforcement agencies that were involved in the search of the school.

We will continue to provide the necessary safety precautions to insure student safety at all times. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at dpowers@usd266.com or call me at 722-0614.

The "all clear" has been given at Maize South High School after a bomb threat. Students were evacuated this morning.

An email sent spoke of a bomb threat at the school. The bomb detection unit from McConnell Air Force Base aided in the search of the building and no device was found.

Students were moved to Maize South Middle School.

Students are now allowed back on the MSHS campus to retrieve vehicles and personal items. School will resume with a normal schedule tomorrow.

Notes sent to Maize South parents;

MSHS received an email this morning indicating a threat of violence to personnel and students. Wichita Police Department (WPD) has been notified and the MSHS students are currently being evacuated from the building. All MSHS students will remain together at the evacuation location until we are given further instructions from WPD. Updates will be sent to you as soon as they are available. Please do not come up to the school at this time. Be assured your students are safe and we will notify you shortly about dismissal plans for today.

Second Message to District Staff and ECC/MSHS families: The Wichita Police Department has cleared the district to release Maize South High School students to parents who come to Maize South Middle School to pick up their child. Maize South Middle School is located at 3403 N. Tyler Road. MSHS students will not be allowed to return to the school parking lot at this time to retrieve their vehicles. Students will only be released to parents who come to Maize South Middle School to pick up their child. Students not picked up by parents will remain at Maize South Middle School at this point. We will continue to send you updates about the situation as they are available.

Note: ECC stands for Early Childhood Center which is located in a wing of MSHS.

The district is in communication with parents of MSHS students regarding dismissal plans for today at that school. We are asking for parents and community members to stay clear of the Maize South High School grounds while the police conduct their investigation.
