The Sedgwick County Commission voted 4-1 in favor of using land near the Mid-Continent Airport for a construction and demolition landfill. Commissioners say today's vote doesn't mean the end of this issue. The applicant for the landfill now has to go to the KDHE for approval to build the landfill. The issue will come back to the county commission for final approval. Protestors say they will continue to fight.

The Sedgwick County Commission meeting room is packed, with overflow set up in another room for a hearing involving a proposed landfill at 55th South and Ridge Road.

Landowners and homeowners are lined up to speak in protest of the landfill. They say building a landfill in the area will cause flooding and damage to nearby roads. One mother, who brought her two young children, got very emotional as she talked about possible water contamination.

Resource Recovery Management says a landfill is needed in the area, claiming drainage would not be a problem. The company's attorney is showing maps saying drainage will not be an issue.

Today's hearing is for a zoning change that will allow Resource Recovery Management to apply to the state for the landfill.
