A Sedgwick County judge has found an inmate guilty of setting fire to a van in an attempt to escape.
Eli Edwards was found guilty of aggravated arson and aggravated attempted escape.
Prosecutors said Edwards smuggled a handcuff key and cigarette lighter into a van in May, 2010, as he and five other inmates were being taken to other facilities across the state.
Deputy Kelvin Hicks testified that inmates began complaining of a foul smell and then they spotted a fire in the back of the van.
Edwards ankles were shackled. He was tased by deputies.
Edwards was being held on numerous charges including domestic battery and criminal threat. The state of Texas wants him to serve life sentences for convictions. Edwards also escaped from Oklahoma authorities in 2006 before going on a crime spree.
The fire destroyed the van.
