A local security company is sending warning to make sure residents are on the lookout. Protection One Security Solutions is asking people to be leery of door-to-door security sellers. In some cases, they claim to be from Protection One, but they’re not.

So you already have a home security system. Evidently, some overly aggressive salesmen will disregard that and say they represent that company in order to get you to sign a new contract.

What folks at Protection One say they’re seeing about what they call “slammers,” the rest of us might call the “scammers,” is about the same difference. They’re actually security service companies willing to steal business, even if it means misrepresentation.

Protection One’s Chief Marketing Officer says it starts with the hiring of new college grads or students desperate to make quick bucks with a summer job.

"Essentially what they do is they go very aggressively door to door and they misrepresent, not all of them, but a lot will misrepresent who they are, who they represent and they'll, what I call, bamboozle customers into switching companies," says Jamie Rosand Haenggi of Protection One.

Haenggi says her customers have called saying there’s a Protection One person at their door when, if fact, that person doesn’t work for Protection One.

She says the “slammers” might say they’re there to upgrade the resident’s security system for free or give another fictitious reason for being there when, in reality, they’re trying to get the resident to sign a new security contract with an entirely different company. It can wind up costing the customer.

"We'll get things like... 'We heard you were acquired by this company and so we're out here to put you under a new contract.' We'll hear complaints like that," says Haenggi.

She’s putting the word out, so residents ask for proper identification and not get scammed. And since these scammers seem to work their scam most often in the summer, we can hope they'll go away along with the summer heat.
