The City of Derby passed an 8.5 percent water rate hike after Wichita raises rates.
Last week the Wichita City Council passed a rate hike for residential and business customers but also for wholesale buyers like the City of Derby.
Derby along with 10 other communities that buy water from Wichita received a 10.5 percent increase.
City Manager Kathy Sexton said the hike has to be passed on to customers.
"We don't like it, but we understand it," Sexton said about being forced to pay more for water.
The hike will go into effect in Derby on Jan. 1.
