A Derby teen is back at home and looking to the future as he starts his long road to recovery following an accident, that forced doctors to amputate both his legs.

18 year old Colby Liston was at school in Lawrence when the accident happened Sunday August 26. He had just started his freshman year at the University of Kansas when he was hit by a car while climbing into the back of an SUV.

"All I remember was going to get into the car and then waking up in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. That's all I remember,” Colby Liston said.

Colby was pinned between the two cars. Doctors had to amputate both of his legs. His dad tells us when Colby woke up, he was the one to tell him.

"And of course his first reaction was well how am I going to get to class. And then the next one was well that's OK, that guy just ran the 400 in the Olympics and he didn't have legs. That was the second thing out of his mouth,” Matt Liston said.

Colby's positive attitude has only grown stronger since then. He tells us he hasn't felt sorry for himself once since the accident.

"I think being optimistic is a lot easier, looking at it as like, 'Oh here in four weeks I’ll be up on my feet.' Rather than, 'I'm in a wheelchair for four weeks.' It's a lot easier to be optimistic about it,” Colby Liston said.

The Derby High School grad played football and ran track. He was supposed to walk onto KU's track team this year.

He tells us he should get fitted for prosthetics in about three weeks. After that, the athlete says he hopes to get back out on the track one day.

“Yeah, I’d like to. We'll start with walking and see if we can get to running and see where it takes me,” Colby Liston said.

Colby says he will be taking online classes this spring and hopes to head back to KU next fall.
