Police have released new information in the drowning death of a 3-year-old Wichita boy.
Two brothers, ages 3 and 2, were napping in the apartment along with their mother, who works nights, and their grandfather.
The children reportedly woke up and the 3-year-old unlocked the door to the apartment. The boys left while the adults were still asleep.
The apartment manager found the wandering 2-year-old a few minutes later and called police. He was familiar with the family, so he also called the boy's grandmother, who was at work.
She alerted the mother and grandfather, who at first assumed both kids were with authorities.
Police believe the 3-year-old, identified as Jayden Barnard, may have fallen from a dock, which the family has walked to in the past.
The search for a missing child ends in tragedy after he's found at the bottom of a lake. Officers are looking into exactly what happened leading up to the apparent drowning of a 3-year-old boy. He was reported missing around 3:00 p.m. Wednesday from Southlake Village Apartments, and found about two hours later. He was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after that.
"That crushed me, it's just a 3-year-old boy, life ended so soon," said Southlake Village Apartments resident Kelsy Giffin.
Giffin was just one resident helping search for the little boy throughout the afternoon.
"I helped them look for a little while, let them in the laundry rooms, looked under some of the cars," said Giffin.
But it would be a scuba diver who would find him about 20 feet below the surface of the lake.
"He was submerged to the point that it made it too difficult for officers to see him from the surface," said Wichita Police Capt. Troy Livingston.
Police say they're not sure how long the child was submerged underwater. They're still investigating how he got out of the apartment, where he was reportedly in the care of a parent.
"It's still sketchy. We're still trying to figure that out. However, the child was able to get away from the apartment. You know kids are quick, they can leave quickly," said Livingston.
Police say they found him near a dock on the lake. Crews rushed him to the hospital, but he was soon pronounced dead.
"The firefighters, officers, EMS are very emotional. Nobody likes to see this," said Livingston.
Police expect to release more information Thursday morning.
UPDATE: 5:05 p.m.
The child was found in at least six feet of water around 5:00. He was taken to a Wichita hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
