The City of Wichita and the YMCA are planning to build a new state-of-the-art facility at First and Waco. The multi-level facility would replace the old facility near 3rd and Market and could play a factor in revitalizing downtown Wichita.
During Mayor Carl Brewer's State of the City speech Tuesday night, he talked about a rough economy, budget cuts and tightening. He then surprised everyone with news of the Y, saying it will give Wichita additional momentum.
"Some of you may ask how much it will cost to further revitalize downtown. I don't know what it will cost, but if we don't invest in downtown now, we'll lose jobs, family and young people to other cities," Mayor Brewer said.
A $23 million YMCA facility is currently being finished near Andover. It features two indoor pools, a state-of-the-art rock climbing wall, a waterpark, three gyms and five locker rooms.
The Y is funding new facilities by private donations and memberships.
Planning for the downtown Wichita location is still in the early stages and more information should be released next week.
