Two men who tried to rob a West Wichita restaurant got more than they ordered early Wednesday morning.
Around 2:00, police say the men walked into the 24-hour Tacos Lopez on N. West Street. One of them pulled a gun and demanded money.
As the suspects tried to empty the cash register, police say an employee hurled a metal pipe at them.
That employee is David Hernandez, an overnight cook for Tacos Lopez. Hernandez tells KAKE News the suspects forced him and another employee into a back room, where they were told to stay on the floor.
Hernandez says when the robbers were distracted, he fought back. He said he felt he needed to protect his co-workers and the business.
Although the metal pipe missed the suspects, it caught them off-guard, giving Hernandez time to act. He tackled the suspect with a gun, scuffling with both men through the kitchen and out into the parking lot.
Hernandez says he wreslted the gun away and used it to beat one of the suspects. He held both in headlocks, until one bit his finger, got loose, and was able to escape.
Jail records show Ruben Moreno-Ortiz, 23, was arrested and booked on charges of Aggravated Robbery. Police say he was taken to a hospital, where he needed staples in his head after the fight with Hernandez.
Investigators are still looking for the second suspect, and discourage robbery victims from fighting back against anybody armed with a deadly weapon.
